(S06E23) So, 30 million votes were cast last night. And here's what we're told:- Phil, Melinda, and Blake ARE NOT the bottom three.
- Chris S, LaKisha, Jordin ARE also NOT in the bottom three.
- Sanjaya, Haley, Gina? Nope, NOT the bottom three.
- Chris R and Stephanie ARE the bottom two.
The crowd is clearly upset that Chris and Stephanie are the bottom-feeders this week. Ryan doesn't drag out the torture too much (he can't, because they're out of time) and quickly tells us that Chris STAYS and Stephanie HEADS HOME.
Stephanie cries, the judges don't say anything again, and Steph is robbed of her final song.
I sort of figured that Stephanie might be going home. The girl has an amazing voice, but just couldn't keep up with LaKisha, Melinda, or Jordin. Fair or not, she's been compared to them every week. Unfortunately, Steph just never made a big impact. She rarely even gets a mention in the comments here -- good or bad. She just got lost in the shuffle.
So Sanjaya stays, which I'm sure is going to anger lots of Idol fans, and make others gleefully happy. I'm starting to think that this thing might escalate into the "Sanjaya Wars." It could get ugly.Other highlights:
Peter Noone sings "There's A Kind of Hush." I like his personality a lot, and I don't really want to say anything bad about a living legend, but the performance is a bit awkward. Peter looks so alone on stage. Perhaps, he misses the Hermits. I'm no fan of the group performance, but I think Peter could have used a little background support on this one. My seven-year-old son is not impressed at all. He says, "It's not the 60s anymore."- However, my son does approve of the Ford Commercial with the contestants singing "Another Saturday Night." The kids really like these Ford-sponsored music videos, don't they? They are cute, but the whole embedded advertising thing irritates me.
- Brad Garrett shows up, sitting with the contestants and kisses Chris R on the head. It's another subliminal product placement, this time for Brad Garrett and Fox's Til Death.
- Idol Gives Back -- Ryan sends a message to corporate America asking for their help with this endeavor. He also tells us that ten cents is going to be donated for every call made during this special event.
- Lulu sings "To Sir With Love." She definitely looks like Olivia Newton-John (as a couple people mentioned in the comments for last night's show) especially in the Grease-inspired outfit. And you know, I I think she may have bought the same *shoes* as Pickler. She looks a lot more comfy on stage than Peter. And wow, she sure can belt a tune, can't she?

I just can't believe that Stephaine was sent home. It doesn't make any sense to me. It is so unfair. As long as Sanjaya remains, no one is safe. What will happen next week, Melinda or LaKisha will be voted off?
Stephaine should not have been sent home so early. I am so disappointed in the voters. There were certainly a few contestants who should have gone home before her,and I am not just referring to Sanjaya. This is just a travesty.
WAKE UP AMERICA!!!!

Sanjaya sucks!! That has to be some of the most ridiculous singing ever. The worst part is that when you look in his face he knows he shouldn't be there.

While I'm sorry to see Stephanie go, I'm glad they didn't make her sing at the end. Clearly most contestants are upset and at that point I can't imagine they're thrilled about being onstage any longer than they need to be.

I think this year's Idol is a real snooze. For me, Gina and Sundance are the most intriguing performers. The Saga of Sanjaya is about the most interesting aspect of show. You gotta give the kid credit - he certainly keeps it together up there - he does get through it. I'm sorry - Blake's eyes are just a little too close together for my comfort.

Not shocked that Stephanie was voted. People need to realize that it's all about gaining a fanbase and NOT SHARING it with anyone else. Sanjaya has his own solid fanbase. So does Blake.
Unfortunately for Stephanie she shares fanbases with LaKisha, Melinda, and Jordin and Liz above mentioned she just got lost in the shuffle.
Though I'm sure there'll be people screaming conspiracy theories on why Sanjaya is still around. Seriously after years and years of Idol, some people still don't get how a "mediocre" singer can stay longer than a talented singer.

Too bad for Stephanie, but Sanjaya has a following she just couldn't muster. More recap fun at:

Just curious ... I wonder if the people complaining about how "dumb" Americans are (because Stephanie was voted off) VOTED last night?
If you didn't vote for Stephanie last night, and cast lots of votes, then you've no one to blame.
If you did vote a lot, then e proud of yourself. We can each only do so much to save our favorite contestants. If enough people don't vote for your favorite, then your favorite gets voted off. Simple enough.

Liz, what are you smoking? Lulu's performance was unlistenable. I love her personality, but it's embarrassing to watch aging stars who can no longer sing a note in tune. I bet the judges would have called her "pitchy"... and worse. These icons should stick to their role as advisors; they're useful in that capacity. But next time, do the lip synch thing.
I was expecting Stephanie or Phil to go, so I'm not surprised. Chris R being second-last IS a surprise, however. He gave the best performance he could and still nearly got cut, so things don't look too good for him. My guess is he'll stay away from ballads from now on.

I think Idol needs to make it the Top 12 tour but I guess there aren't enough beds on the tour bus or something? Just doesn't seem fair that Brandon and Stephanie don't get to tour.
From looking at Dial Idol, there are a few contestants that are on the verge each week and it's kind of a draw a straw out of a hat to figure out which one.

ppl like STEPHANIE (and most of the others) are a DIME A DOZEN! you find them EVERYWHERE you go, semi-talented nobodies.
U think half the famous singers out there today can actually sing as well as Lakisha? HELL NO.
Its all about image, charisma, personality, scandal, the X factor. So OBVIOUSLY sanjaya will be around, he has most of those.
and OBVIOUSLY stephanie is a goner, she has NONE of those.
ppl dont buy albums cause the singers can sing 8 octaves, with studio technology everyone can! john lennon isn't an AMAZING singer, but he's one of THE BEST musicians ever! he wouldnt survive a week on american idol with his voice alone.
dont be stupid ppl, know what you are voting for and stop listening to simon, cause when he finally realises sanjaya will out sell lakisha 50 - 1, that hypocritical bastard will change his tune and attack lakisha! i GURANTEE it.

At least 4 others should have left before Stephanie. I think the vote is perverted by the unlimited amount of votes per phone. America should vote each week for the one they think should be voted off. That would end all the split vote problems that allow medicore singers to continue on.

I called it, but I thought it would be either Phil or Steph.vShe just never got it going. Sanj is a non-issue, the more we scream and cry the more they are motivated. I knew as soon as they moved into the theme weeks that the playing field would level out a bit. We'll see how Lakisha and Melinda hold up to Lynard Skynard week or "the best of Journey"

So it is disgusting that Stephanie is going home. She may not have had the best night, but, even at her worst, she is more tolerable then the guy who makes little girls cry. I can't even say his name anymore. I refuse to say it. Maybe if we all stop talking about san-gay-ja, he will go away! If only!

Sabrina deserved Top 5,
but she couldn't make the Top 12.
Stephanie deserved Top 5,
but she couldn't make the Top 10.
& don't be surprised if Gina and Haley
stay longer than Lakesha.
As I mentioned before, demographics, music style, jokes, looks and the pitiful vote are coming in strong this season.
This is my guess as to what’s going on here:
1) Divas deserve the most votes, but when you have 4 of them, the votes get split.
Stephanie has a batch of votes that she has to share with Jordin, Melinda and Lakesha, which has hit a plateau. Let's say that style of music gets 40% of the vote and no higher than that.
Wouldn't Melinda get ~15%
Jordin gets a younger vote and that gives her 12%
Lakesha can still hold about 10%
That leaves Stephanie with no more than 2-3% of the vote
2) Gina got votes like Nikki McGibbon did in the 1st season - female rocker
3) Sanjaya got votes like Kevin Covais did last season - pitiful / cute little boy vote
4) Haley got votes like Kimberly Caldwell got in the 2nd season - hot babe vote
5) Chris S. got votes like Chris Savol got in the 4th season - joke vote
No matter how bad the singers above are, they have guaranteed votes, and the only way a diva can get more votes is to have one of the divas get voted off. It's simple math.
Since Jennifer Hudson lost out to Jasmine Trias, I could easily see Lakesha get voted off before Haley. The show couldn't have 3 Divas in the Top 5 during Season 3. I expect the same thing to happen this season.
& It's a shame.
Don't be surprised if Sanjaya makes the Top 5. He gets pitiful, cute & joke votes. That's a very powerful group of demographics.
