American Idol: Live Results Show #5

Stephanie Edwards and Chris Richardson(S06E23) So, 30 million votes were cast last night. And here's what we're told:
  • Phil, Melinda, and Blake ARE NOT the bottom three.
  • Chris S, LaKisha, Jordin ARE also NOT in the bottom three.
  • Sanjaya, Haley, Gina? Nope, NOT the bottom three.
Which only means one thing:
  • Chris R and Stephanie ARE the bottom two.
It also means that Sanjaya IS in the Top 10 and will join the Idols on tour. Is this a victory for Vote for the Worst and Howard Stern? Or is it really a victory for the Idol producers who can now count on Sanjaya's teenybopper fans shelling out loads of cash to see him live and in concert?

The crowd is clearly upset that Chris and Stephanie are the bottom-feeders this week. Ryan doesn't drag out the torture too much (he can't, because they're out of time) and quickly tells us that Chris STAYS and Stephanie HEADS HOME.

Stephanie cries, the judges don't say anything again, and Steph is robbed of her final song.

I sort of figured that Stephanie might be going home. The girl has an amazing voice, but just couldn't keep up with LaKisha, Melinda, or Jordin. Fair or not, she's been compared to them every week. Unfortunately, Steph just never made a big impact. She rarely even gets a mention in the comments here -- good or bad. She just got lost in the shuffle.

So Sanjaya stays, which I'm sure is going to anger lots of Idol fans, and make others gleefully happy. I'm starting to think that this thing might escalate into the "Sanjaya Wars." It could get ugly.

Other highlights:

  • Lulu Peter Noone sings "There's A Kind of Hush." I like his personality a lot, and I don't really want to say anything bad about a living legend, but the performance is a bit awkward. Peter looks so alone on stage. Perhaps, he misses the Hermits. I'm no fan of the group performance, but I think Peter could have used a little background support on this one. My seven-year-old son is not impressed at all. He says, "It's not the 60s anymore."
  • However, my son does approve of the Ford Commercial with the contestants singing "Another Saturday Night." The kids really like these Ford-sponsored music videos, don't they? They are cute, but the whole embedded advertising thing irritates me.
  • Brad Garrett shows up, sitting with the contestants and kisses Chris R on the head. It's another subliminal product placement, this time for Brad Garrett and Fox's Til Death.
  • Idol Gives Back -- Ryan sends a message to corporate America asking for their help with this endeavor. He also tells us that ten cents is going to be donated for every call made during this special event.
  • Lulu sings "To Sir With Love." She definitely looks like Olivia Newton-John (as a couple people mentioned in the comments for last night's show) especially in the Grease-inspired outfit. And you know, I I think she may have bought the same *shoes* as Pickler. She looks a lot more comfy on stage than Peter. And wow, she sure can belt a tune, can't she?
Next Week: Tuesday (March 27) Top 10 perform (8-9:07 PM), Wednesday (March 28) Live Results (9-9:30 PM)
